How to Recover Abandoned Carts with WhatsApp (With Templates)

How to recover abandoned carts on WhatsApp: consent, timing, what to say, example messages, automating it from Shopify, and handling the replies.

Most visitors who add something to the cart leave without buying. Some were only browsing, but many were interrupted, unsure about delivery, or waiting to ask a question. A short WhatsApp message reaches them where they already are, and gives them an easy way to ask that question.

Why WhatsApp works for cart recovery

  • Messages are seen quickly, unlike emails that sit in a promotions tab.
  • The customer can reply with a question, which is often the real reason they left.
  • Many shoppers check out with a phone number but never open marketing email.

Consent comes first

Only message shoppers who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp, for example with an opt-in checkbox at checkout. Messaging people who did not opt in gets the number reported, and reports hurt every message you send afterwards.

Timing

  • Send the reminder within a few hours of the checkout being abandoned, while the purchase is still on their mind.
  • One reminder is usually enough. Repeated nudges feel like spam, whatever the discount.
  • Do not remind shoppers who completed the order in the meantime.

What to say

Name the product, link back to the checkout, and invite a reply. A simple offer of help usually works better than an immediate discount, which teaches customers to abandon carts on purpose.

Example reminder: "Hi Sara, you left the Embroidered Lawn Suit (Rs 4,500) in your cart. Your checkout is saved here: [link]. Any questions about size or delivery? Just reply."

Automating it

Cart recovery only works if it happens automatically. Xenwap reads abandoned checkouts from Shopify and, after the delay you choose (from fifteen minutes to the next day), sends one WhatsApp reminder with the items, the total and a link back to the checkout. Carts that turn into orders are tracked as recovered. See WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery for the setup. WooCommerce does not expose abandoned checkouts without an extra plugin, so this is Shopify-only for now.

On the official Cloud API, a reminder to someone who has not messaged you in the last 24 hours needs an approved marketing template, and Meta charges for it. Cost is covered in WhatsApp Business API pricing.

Handle the replies

The reply is where the sale is won: "does it come in medium?", "how long is delivery to Multan?". Replies land in the shared inbox, and an AI assistant trained on your catalog and delivery policy can answer them instantly.

Measure it

Track how many reminded carts were completed, and compare with carts that were not reminded. Also watch opt-outs: if many people reply STOP, the message or the timing needs work.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery work with WooCommerce?

Not in Xenwap yet. WooCommerce does not provide abandoned checkouts without an extra plugin, so automated recovery is Shopify-only. WooCommerce order sync does work.

How many cart reminders should I send?

One is usually enough, and it is what Xenwap sends. Repeated reminders feel like spam and get the number reported.

Should I offer a discount in the first message?

Usually not. Offer help first. Discounts in every reminder train customers to abandon carts on purpose.
